Myofascial Release is a form of stretching that concentrates on the neural system and fibrous tissue that surrounds and separates each muscle. When gentle force is applied with a foam roller on a knot, the muscles fibers that are bunched up will align in a straight direction with the muscle and fascia. This is also considered a form of stretching because when the foam roller is pressed into the muscle it stimulates the Golgi tendon organ which in turn decreases muscle spindle excitation, also known as autogenic inhibition. In other words, the tendon and muscle act upon themselves causing the muscle to relax and release knots and tension within the muscle. This an excellent way to correct muscular imbalances by rolling out the tensions and knots in overactive muscles that are pulling excessively on a joint. |
