Postural Correction Training for Muscular Imbalances and Posture Misalignment

Deep hip flexors of the iliacus and psoas muscles Gluteus maximus Pectoralis minor Common muscles responsible for muscular imbalances and postural misalignments

What are postural deformities and muscular imbalances and how can a personal fitness trainer help these muscle and posture issues?

I will listen to your needs and fitness goals but as a caring personal fitness trainer here in New York City, New York I will also pay close attention to your posture to ensure that the appropriate corrections can be put into the fitness training. It is important to lose fat and tone muscle but it should be done in conjunction with a program that addressees and corrects the postural imbalances that many people are suffering because of living sedentary lifestyles. A postural or muscular imbalance is caused when the muscles that act upon a joint are either too tight and overworked or too loose and seldom used, essentially disrupting the efficient movement of the kinetic chain. By living a life of many hours seated while working or watching TV the body begins to adapt to this way of being, causing a person to have rolled over shoulders, abdomens that protrude with an anteriorly tilted pelvis and painful backs. These are typical symptoms of muscular imbalances and postural deformities.

How can a personal trainer help to correct these postural deformities and muscular imbalances?

Most any muscular imbalance can be corrected with exercises that strengthen those muscles that are underactive, and stretches with myofascia release therapy (click to see photos) that elongate those muscles that are overactive and tight. The most common symptoms of muscular imbalances are the ones mentioned above, rolled over shoulders and protruding head from hours leaning over a computer. Or a tight and painful lower back caused from sitting long hours, accompanied with a pelvis that tilts forward. As an experienced personal trainer, I will be concerned with my client's proper postural alignment and will perform an assessment to determine the exact muscles that are causing the imbalance and form an effective program for my clients to both meet my client’s fitness goals and correct their postural imbalances by focusing on the most effective exercises and paying close attention to technique and form. The assessment is important because postural imbalances can be caused by many different muscles but typically it will be found that the shoulders are being pulled forward by a tight Pectoralis major and minor and/or the Latissimus dorsi, while weak mid and lower trapezius muscles aren’t doing their jobs to pull the shoulders back in proper alignment. The forward tilting pelvis can be associated with many different imbalances but commonly the muscles that are responsible are the Psoas and Iliacus of the deep hip flexor complex that are tightened from being in a constant state of flexion while seated, and pull on the top of the pelvis and pull on the lumbar spine, causing the back pain that many people suffer. The muscle that commonly allows the pelvis to tilt forward is a weakened Gluteus maximus, a known muscle by many to be that which is paid particular close attention. Flabby hips, thighs, and buttocks caused by inactivity not only is an undesired characteristic, but also a serious culprit in the muscular imbalances of many sedentary people. All these muscular and postural imbalances can be corrected under my guidance while ensuring that the exercises are done with good form and technique. It should also be noted that as your personal trainer I will be very concerned with your core strength and stability, by training these areas and bringing these strengths up I have always been very successful with correcting many muscular imbalances - particularly in the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex. The average time it takes to improve postural imbalances depends on how severe the problem is, however in most cases I see tremendous improvements in a 4-6 week range.

Testimonial to the Postural Correction Abilites of Christer Fredrickson

"My whole life I practically lived behind a desk. When I was in school I was so busy with my studies all I did was sit, read, and write. I barely ever made it outside. Sure, my grades were great and I have a terrific job (at a desk of course) but I really messed up my body. I had very bad lower back pain and people kept telling me that I looked like the Hunch Back of Notre Dame. I always just assumed that I would be like this for the rest of my life until I met Christer through a friend of mine. Christer explained that I didn't need to be the way I was anymore and that there was things he could help me with. I agreed to do some personal training sessions to see how it would go and bought enough sessions to last 3 months. Christer started me off slowly to get a feel for the training and I must admit it wasn't so bad, and as the weeks went by the training was getting more and more challenging. After just 4 weeks I began to see so many improvements, not just with how I was standing but also with everything! I was skinnier, I had much more energy, I did not got tired like I used to, but much much more importantly was my lower back was not hurting me anymore. When I completed the 3 month program with Christer not only was I walking upright, I had such a terrific looking body. It's worth it to have Christer help you out with whatever you need helping out with."

Posture Correction is Possible with a Personal Trainer

If you are in need of correcting your postural imbalances look no further, I have helped dozens upon dozens get on the right track to living easier lives just by getting them straightened up. Sound too good to be true? When your body is out of line, you don't move efficiently. Not moving efficiently causes you to literally work harder to move and get around, even sitting can be tiring. By doing exercises that improve posture you win on two fronts: First of all you improve your posture through my postural correction techniques of course, secondly because you are exercising to improve your posture, you are getting a great workout and you're burning calories and burning fat. How interesting it is knowing you can exercise for postural correction while all at the same get fit and start to look your best. That is something that few people realize when they take me on to help them with their postural issues. I have countless personal training clients that come to me with only the intention of correcting their posture but after a few weeks or a month with me tell me how good they are feeling and about all the compliments they get from all their friends about how beautiful they are looking. I can't begin to tell you how good that makes me feel to know I'm making such a huge difference in someone's life. Postural correction to me not only is an art, but can also create art. Take for instance I begin to work with a person who for the greater part of their life spent it on the couch or seated behind a computer for hours on end everyday working so hard on their careers or studies. I take that person and put them through an exercise regime to correct their postures, and lo and behold out comes from that training a brand new person, looking so good from all the fat loss and the muscle tone. And what I really like to see from the postural correction training is the high self esteem from knowing about standing higher and much more erect and having a body that's leaner and much more attractive looking. That is what I call creating art.

Is Postural Correction worth it with a Personal Trainer

The short answer is yes. To be able to stand up straight and move efficiently is the greatest investment you can make because it's for a lifetime. A lifetime of feeling good because not only do you look good, but also because you are able to do many physically challenging activities without becoming tired, fatigued, or just not be able to them at all. And this also means you do not become emotionally fatigued as well. Sound to weird to be true? Imaging how you would feel emotionally if you were able to do physically difficult tasks much more easily. You would never have to really worry about them much because you would get through just fine. Now look at it from the point of view of someone who has a difficult time with physical tasks. This person does not want to attempt to do anything that could be physically trying or even worse attempts to do something and fails. That alone can be so hard on ones self esteem that it can be emotionally damaging. Having me help you will not only improve your posture, it will in the long run have you feeling your best and most confident, ready to take on any challenge that you have coming your way, and ready to take on challenges you walked away from in the past or just would never dare to do.

While we we were growing up, people were always telling us, "Quit slouching!"

But why is it that posture is so of the essence to a personal fitness trainer? Well, forget about the fact that proper posture and postural alignment is able to help a aching back and neck. Don't even imagine about the importance of posture in sports performance and injury prevention. And why should we trouble ourselves about putting a stop to or even ending the development of osteoporosis or arthritis? What if I were to say to my clients that I had the knowledge on how to make them to appear more confident and attractive? Do you think they would stop slumping to take heed? The secret, of course, is good posture.
Almost all we do is in front of us. Now with that said, here's a guaranteed recipe for trouble: mix in a little forward lean with a touch of gravity, and you will have a condition described as slumping (a.k.a. poor posture). This bad habit repeated constantly over a long period of time will result in a badly aligned body with numerous muscular imbalances. As a result, extraordinary stress is put on the joints, muscles, bones, and ligaments of the body. Thus, bad posture isn't just an aesthetic problem touching on appearance, but it can as well end up with discomfort, pain and possibly impairment. Then again, a well aligned person is capable to apply gravity to remain upright and make a motion freely as opposed to constantly fighting it. Bones move where muscles direct them, here is an example: It’s like setting up a tent because you adjust the ropes and not the pole if it's not standing upright. Alas, many people push aside the important role that posture plays on their wellness.
Even though posture is typically viewed as a static condition, to a personal trainer it as well influences the way we move. Posture can be plainly expressed as the position from which motion starts and finishes. It is a projection of the arrangement of ones body part to the next. Of course, ideal posture is the arrangement of the joints from which the body functions most efficiently. In order to achieve proper posture, you must have sufficient joint range of motion and flexibility as well as a balanced set of strong postural muscles. In other words, you need to train the body to sit, walk, stand and lie in positions that put the least amount of stress on load-bearing structures during weight bearing activities or motion. The subject matter should be clear: We must endeavor for balance in our bodies and devote greater attention to our posture.
